I was in computer sales for over ten years. One thing that I learned early on is that technology is changing and improving every day, and as a result computers become outdated almost before they are sold. So if you?re a tech lover like me, you can end up with quite the computer graveyard over time. Consumer electronics are now the fastest growing wastestream on the planet. I shouldn?t be surprised about that. I love tech. I have outdated computers all over the place ? at the bottom of my closet, one in the living room, three in the garage, and one under my bed. What to do? You can?t just throw them away in the trash. You can?t just stick them in your recycling bucket either. And so they accumulate. What?s a tech lover to do?
Recycle. It makes sense. We recycle so many other things, why not tech products. I recently learned that Best Buy currently offers an in-store recycling program. As one of the world?s largest consumer electronics retailer, they want to be part of the solution to the consumer electronics waste problem. The Best Buy Recycling Program is an in-store solution for customers to bring their old, unused, or unwanted consumer electronics. You don?t even have to have purchased the items you?re recycling from Best Buy to take advantage of it. Best Buy recycles 387 pounds of electronics each minute their stores are open. That?s a lot of tech products! The great thing is that Best Buy works with recyclers to actually recycle your products, rather then ship them to other countries to be repurposed. The program is available for free at all Best Buy stores in the US, including the ones in Puerto Rico.

I think this sounds like a great program and it will likely only get more popular as technology advances and becomes more affordable.
Currently, Best Buy has some additional recycling programs in addition to the in-store recycling program, including:
- Recycling Kiosks ? Every US and Puerto Rico Best Buy store has free kiosks, just inside the door, for you to drop off ink and toner cartridges, rechargeable batteries, and wires, cords and cables.
- Appliance and TV Haul-Away ? Best Buy will remove an appliance or TV free of charge from a customer?s home when a new product is purchased and delivered by Best Buy Home Delivery.
- Appliance and TV Pickup ? For $100, Best Buy will arrange a home visit to remove up to two appliances or TVs for recycling. For more than two units, add $20 per additional unit.
- Trade-In @ Best Buy ? Customers can visit wwww.bestbuy.com/tradein to trade-in select gently used electronics for a Best Buy gift card.
Did you know that Best Buy carries a whole line of Energy Star certified products as well? Consider recycling your old electronics and upgrading to more energy efficient ones.
