TELUS lists the HTC One X as 'coming soon'

HTC One X

Typically in Canada when a device launches, it launches across multiple carriers due to the fact all major players are now running GSM. In some instances though, there is an exclusive offer made for a period of time and such is the case with the HTC One X and Rogers. Rogers was the first carrier is Canada to launch the device but that exclusivity looks to be dropping off soon as TELUS has now posted the HTC One X under their "coming soon" category. No actual release dates or pricing have been outlined as of yet but surely pricing will be on par with that of Rogers and rumors suggest a release could happen as early as July 6th. We'll let you all know when we see it go live on the TELUS site.

Samsung launches official UK Top 40 chart app on Galaxy Ace II

Samsung

Samsung has teamed up with music app-maker MusicQubed to launch an official UK Top 40 chart app across its range of smartphones. The app will debut on the Galaxy Ace II, which Sammy says is launching today in the UK.  Presumably it'll later start begin roll out across the Galaxy line through the Google Play Store. Unfortunately we're not able to use it on our Galaxy S III due to our being on an "unsupported network" (go figure), and our Jelly Bean'd Galaxy Nexus was deemed incompatible, too.

For those with both a a compatible handset and supported carrier, the MusicQubed chart app, Samsung says, gives users unlimited plays of the current UK top 40. It apparently works by caching these tracks overnight, meaning there's no need to stream out of your precious cellular data allowance. The app also delivers "daily celebrity news updates," if you're into that sort of thing. There's also social integration via both  Twitters and the Facebook. Galaxy phone owners will get free access to the app for two months, after which it'll cost £1 per week.

Check past the break for the full presser.

New brain receptor for drug 'fantasy' identified

ScienceDaily (July 2, 2012) ? Researchers are closer to understanding the biology behind GHB, a transmitter substance in the brain, best known in its synthetic form as the illegal drug fantasy.

In the 1960s, gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) was first discovered as a naturally occurring substance in the brain. Since then it has been manufactured as a drug with a clinical application and has also developed a reputation as the illegal drug fantasy and as a date rape drug. Its physiological function is still unknown.

Now a team of researchers at the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology at the University of Copenhagen has shown for the first time exactly where the transmitter substance binds in the brain under physiologically relevant conditions. The results have recently been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"We have discovered that GHB binds to a special protein in the brain -- more specifically a GABAA-receptor. The binding is strong even at very low dosage. This suggests that we have found the natural receptor, which opens new and exciting research opportunities, in that we have identified an important unknown that can provide the basis for a full explanation of the biological significance of the transmitter," says Laura Friis Eghorn, PhD student.

Illegal use and possible antidote

Fantasy is also used as a so-called date rape drug, because in moderate amounts it has sedative, sexually stimulating and soporific effects. The compound is also abused for its euphoric effect, but in combination with alcohol, for example, it is a deadly cocktail that can lead to a state of deep unconsciousness or coma.

"GHB is registered for use as a drug to treat alcoholism and certain types of sleep disorders, but the risk of abuse presents difficulties. In the long-term, understanding how GHB works will enable us to develop new and better pharmaceuticals with a targeted effect in the brain, without the dangerous side-effects of fantasy," explains Laura Friis Eghorn, Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology.

Fantasy is an extremely toxic euphoriant, because the difference between a normal intoxicating dose and a fatal dose is so small. A better understanding of the biological mechanisms behind GHB-binding in the brain will benefit research into a life-saving antidote for this drug. Today there is no known antidote.

Statistics from Denmark in 2010 show that 8-10 percent of young people who frequent night clubs have had experience with Fantasy. However, since the drug is often also used in private for its sedative effect, it is difficult to estimate the extent of abuse.

Researchers on a targeted fishing expedition

The new research findings are the result of a collaboration between researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia and medicinal chemists at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences:

"Our chemist colleagues designed and produced special ligands -- that are mimics of GHB in several variations. This enabled us to go on a targeted fishing expedition in the brain. We have slowly found our way to the receptor, which we have also been able to test pharmacologically. In itself, it is not unusual to find new receptors in the brain for known compounds. However, when we find a natural match rooted in the brain's transmitter system, the biological implications are extremely interesting," explains Petrine Wellendorph, associate professor and head of the responsible research group that produced the pioneering results.

Howard Co. Health Commissioner: Life With Parkinson's Would Be ...

HOWARD COUNTY, Md. (WJZ)?One of Maryland?s leading health commissioners wants to put a face on the health care issue?in light of the Supreme Court?s decision to uphold the president?s health insurance law.

Gigi Barnett speaks with Dr. Peter Beilenson about his diagnosis.

The Howard County health commissioner sees a doctor regularly because he has health insurance. But he says without it, he would be like millions of Americans. He would not be able to get well.

As President Barack Obama?s Affordable Care Act received backing from the Supreme Court,? Howard County health commissioner Dr. Beilenson watched the debate closely. Not only because he?s at the forefront of health care for all in Maryland, but because he recently revealed that he has early on-set Parkinson?s disease.

?It?s characterized by rigidity, stiffness, slowness in movement and tremor,? Beilenson said.

Belienson sat down with WJZ at Johnny?s Bistro in Ellicott City. He talked about the day he self-diagnosed the disease, shortly after taking the helm of Howard County?s Health Department.

Another doctor confirmed it.

?Honestly I figured it out, so I had some time to deal with it. It wasn?t hugely impacting my life at the time,??? Beilenson said.

Until now Beilenson kept the diagnosis a secret, only telling his family and close friends.

That was five years ago. Now he says there?s a reason to come forward.

?No one really talked about how it affects a real individual. I thought it was important to say, ?look, here?s someone who deals with health policy but also has a condition of his own, and this is why it?s important to have health care reform,?? Beilenson said.

But Beilenson has health insurance ? good insurance from the state. Without it, he says life with Parkinson?s would be much different.

?The point is, I?m fine. And I?m fine because I have health insurance,? he said.

Beilenson said the next step for him now that the Supreme Court has ruled is to continue to help people who do not have health care.? He says the next step is working on a statewide health care cooperative that would give insurance for millions of Marylanders.

Beilenson lead the Healthy Howard initiative, which provides healthcare for Howard County residents who have little to no insurance.

How You Can Quit Smoking For Good | iBuzzs.com

To help you quit smoking, you should go to use a stop smoking aide. There are many aides available on the market which you can purchase at your local pharmacy. These aides can help relax your cravings while you are going through the quitting process. With the use of help, more than likely you will continue to smoke.

Put aside the money you would have normally spent on cigarettes, and save it for something that you really want, like a new outfit, some nice furniture, or a weekend away. Not only will you be feeling healthier, but you?ll soon see how much money you can save now that you?re not smoking.

Though aversion therapies have gotten a bad rap recently, they do sometimes work in helping you to stop smoking. They do not need to be extravagant methods and you don?t need to pay a therapist to employ aversion techniques. Try the simple things, such as permeating your favorite sweater with the smoke from that last cigarette you smoke. Then reach for it after not smoking for a day or two; you will be appalled at the offensive odor that you have been subjecting yourself and others to on a daily basis.

Cigarette cravings are unpleasant, but you can push yourself out of one with enough willpower. Next time you crave a cigarette, try this tip: Focus on your favorite place, right down to the very last detail. This can be anything, so really use your imagination. By the time you have finished painting this portrait in your mind, you will have pushed past your craving.

Do not try to set a day to quit. Instead of trying to make a plan, quit today. This sort of planning nearly never works and it will lead to disappointment. Start quitting right away, rather than trying to create an imaginary timeline for yourself. Take action and you will get where you want to be.

When you are trying to quit smoking, do not attempt to do it overnight. Nicotine addiction is powerful, and it is going to take you some time to wean yourself off of it. You are much more likely to relapse if you quit cold turkey, so take it slow and get it right the first time.

Help yourself stop smoking by only allowing yourself to smoke a certain amount of cigarettes a day. You can do this by deciding the day before how many you will have the next day. This will keep you from going over that set amount every day and cut back on smoking.

Cut your caffeine intake in half. Somehow, nicotine cuts the effectiveness of caffeine in half, so after quitting, soda and coffee will be doubly effective. Drop your consumption of these so that you don?t cause your anxiety to become even worse than it already is at this difficult time.

Using some type of nicotine replacement is a good way to slowly ease your addiction to smoking when you?re trying to quit. Nicotine replacements come in many forms, including lozenges, gum, and patches that can be worn on the body. These products give your body a small dose of nicotine, which eases cravings for using tobacco products.

To help you quit smoking, some people say that eating low calorie snack foods is very effective. Try purchasing mini carrots, cut up broccoli, cauliflower, dried fruit, low calorie cereal, or sugar-free candy. Consuming any of these items when you have the desire to smoke can help control cravings and keep your mouth busy.

It is true that there are many reasons that motivate people to quit smoking. But motivation alone is not usually the way to success. A successful plan to quit smoking involves motivation and tricks to help you when the going gets rough. Use the tips from above and you will find that becoming a non smoker is within your reach.
