Seek Job Applications Slow Ahead of Christmas | Stuff.co.nz

Job advertisements on online website seek.co.nz are growing at a faster rate than applications as kiwis turn their attention to Christmas shopping and holiday plans.

The Seek Employment Index rose 8.4 per cent in Auckland between October and November this year, according to data from employment website seek.co.nz.

The index measures the ratio of new jobs placed on Seek compared to the number of applications received for them.

Nationally, the index rose 6.2 per cent in November.

Seek New Zealand general manager Janet Faulding said the rise in the index last month was expected with applications slowing as kiwis focus on Christmas shopping and holidays.

"People also typically use the Christmas and New Year break to contemplate their career goals, but, as with every year, we expect to see jobseeker activity increase considerably in the first half of 2013, as Kiwis return to the office and put their goals in motion."

While the index rose considerably in Auckland and only marginally in Canterbury (0.3 per cent) it fell in Wellington by 1.9 per cent, indicating that the number of job applications received were increasing more rapidly than job advertisements.

The fastest growing jobs in the country for the three months to November were import/export and customs roles (up 76 per cent), tertiary lecturers (up 75 per cent), tutors (up 71 per cent), and insurance brokers (up 60 per cent).
