La Mirada High School, the division's top seed, takes on Santa Fe in a matchup scheduled for 7 p.m. at Pioneer High.
The Suburban League champion Matadores (9-1) started their playoff run in fine form last week, defeating Arcadia 42-17 in the first round. Running back Adam Carrasco led La Mirada against Arcadia, rushing for 229 yards and three touchdowns.
Matadores quarterback Gerry Myres also played a key role, passing for 166 yards and two scores. Both of Myres' touchdown throws went to tight end Tyler Luatua.
La Mirada's defense also starred against the Apaches, producing eight sacks.
Santa Fe, meanwhile, experienced a tougher time in its first-round game against Bonita. The Chiefs (7-4), lifted by Christopher Mancilla's 57-yard touchdown pass to Robert Campos, emerged with an 11-10 triumph over the Bearcats.
"We will have our hands full," La Mirada coach Mike Moschetti said. "Santa Fe is well-coached. They will cause a lot of problems offensively. They come out with two tight ends and they will spread you out with a young quarterback (Christian Lara) who is very athletic. He makes plays with his feet and he can throw the ball. We have to try to contain him.
"Defensively, Santa Fe has a great front seven. They're physical and play very
well against the run. Their secondary is very athletic. They will be a tough matchup for us. We're going to have to play four quarters to win."We have nothing but respect for Santa Fe. They played a tough preseason schedule. They are playing great football and they had a great win last week against Bonita. They've got a lot of momentum going for them."
Lara has led the Chiefs' offense this year, rushing for a team-leading 895 yards and nine touchdowns during the regular season. He also passed for 820 yards and six scores.
"It's an opportunity for us to win another game and play better football," said coach David Pierson, who guided Santa Fe to a second-place finish in the Del Rio League. "We're looking forward to the game against La Mirada. It will be tough for us to handle. La Mirada is a very good team."
Chiefs running back Gabriel Cisneros has run for 338 yards and four scores. Charles Muhlenkamp is Santa Fe's top receiver with 22 receptions for 318 yards and two touchdowns.
"The team that doesn't make mistakes is going to win," Moschetti said.
The winner of tonight's game advances to next week's semifinals against either Norwalk or Downey.
